ABSTRACT — Recovered acoustic instrumentation device, designation ALN-4DX, exhibits anomalous spatial sound positioning consistent with binaural topology engineering not yet present in conventional terrestrial audio research. Source craft recovered approximately 12 km north of Roswell, NM following atmospheric event on the night of 04 JUL 1947. Subject device emits acid-class oscillator waveforms positioned in apparent 3D space around the listener, using only two speaker apertures. Reverse-engineering authorized under PROJECT ROOSEVELT, Directive 17-A. G·Sonique DSP laboratory has successfully translated the device to digital VST instrument form for public study.

Acid sound has been understood by terrestrial audio engineers for approximately forty years. The waveform shape is well documented; the analog circuit topology has been thoroughly reproduced. What recovered specimen ALN-4DX presents is something we did not know was possible.

Where regular acid synthesizers reproduce mono oscillator signals — identical in both channels until external effects are applied — Specimen 4DX produces what laboratory personnel describe as "sound that flies around the listener's head." Initial assumption was reverb or chorus signal treatment. Both have been ruled out.

Note: subject device must be auditioned on closed-back headphones or a symmetrical near-field monitor pair to perceive the full 3D effect. Single speaker reproduction diminishes positioning. — Op. M.

The instrument's internal circuitry has been re-mapped. We have identified what appears to be a binaural topology — the device's virtual signal paths are physically arranged to emulate inter-aural time delta, inter-aural level delta, and head-shadow frequency response. The device reproduces the physics by which a human ear locates sound in space.

Translation to digital VST instrument format has been completed by G·Sonique DSP Laboratory under directive 17-A. The translated instrument retains all spatial behaviour of the original specimen. Distribution to civilian electronic music production community has been authorized.

Subject was interviewed regarding the reverse-engineering of recovered specimen ALN-4DX and the translation to civilian VST instrument format. The following is a verbatim transcript of subject's statement, recorded internally under G·Sonique laboratory protocol.

Do you sometimes find synthesizer sound boring, flat, indistinct? Almost all synthesizers — analog or digital — are mono. The left and right channels are identical until you bolt effects on top. We tried a completely new concept.

We placed the sound where the listener can feel it sit in space — between the two ears, not as reverb, but as topology. In our mastering studio we have devices for binaural processing that are one hundred percent analog. We combined the emulation of both digital and analog approaches — different circuits, different modules.

We applied this concept to our first and most legendary instrument: the Alien 303. Alien 303 Binaural Topology brings a completely different type of sound. Spatial, organic, very analog, harmonically rich. A single acid line fills the entire space — and through binaural topology you can sculpt the frequency band with two additional filters.

So that you don't mistake it for binaural reverb — it isn't. It's a completely different technology to create 4D sound.
